Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) is a disease that runs in a cycle from birds to horses to mosquitos to humans. In humans it can cause a form of sleeping sickness and/or swelling of the brain. Unchecked, it can pose a serious threat.

The Massachusetts Health and Homeland Alert Network has determined that the Towns of  Colrain and Heath are at very high risk and that Rowe, Charlemont & Shelburne are at moderate risk for spread of this disease.

Given the fact that Hawley abuts some of those Towns, Hawley residents are best advised to take the following precautions, effective immediately:

1. Use mosquito repellants at all times when outdoors;

2. Avoid the prime mosquito proliferation hours at dawn and dusk; and,

3. Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants when outdoors.
